    Mulberry Recipes

A fascinating fruit that ripens in the early summer, and one of the most bountiful wild fruit in North America. Fresh mulberries are difficult to get out of season and most will need to be foraged from a mulberry tree.

If you're new to this confusing, delicious fruit, read my foraging guide first.

    Quick Tips:

    • The best way to get the fruit down is to climb a tree when the fruit is ripe and shake the berries onto a tarp.
    • All varieties of mulberry are edible, but they must be ripe. Unripe mulberries are said to be mildy toxic or hallucinogenic.
    • The flavor of the fruit varies from tree to tree. Taste different ones to find your favorite mulberry. Invasive white colored mulberries are usually the most uninteresting fruit.
    • There's no need to remove the stems from the fruit as they soften while cooking.
    • Substitute mulberries for any recipe that calls for blueberries, like mulberry muffins.
    • An easy way to use the fruit is to simply put a handful on ice cream.
