Side note: competition on public land is fierce (my old chef and I got 100% skunked yesterday). Bikes can let you cover lots of ground, and access places hikers wouldn’t have the stamina to access on foot. Bring a backpack on your next ride and thank me later.

People who say morels are overrated are probably not very good at finding morels. 😁

Also, if you’ve been out hunting elms and are feeling discouraged, know I have been too. I’d been out for hours and hours getting cut by the gooseberry brambles and stepped in mud up to my ankles, with only two mushrooms to show for it. Then I found a champion tree with 50+ morellies and went home. Just remember it only takes one tree!

Goldenrod shoots with sunflower vinaigrette. The shoots have a strong taste even after blanching so I ate them with an aggressive spicy-salty-sour-umami dressing of sunseeds, fish sauce, garlic, hot chili and @smudeoil (if you haven’t tried Smude’s oil you’re missing out, I like to call it the olive oil of the Midwest).
